The Venturer

The bus

The bus used for the service is a  Mercedes Sprinter EVM CityLine low-floor vehicle. This has improved accessibility for passengers with limited mobility, as well as providing a quieter, more comfortable ride, improved passenger information and USB charging points for passengers. The bus came into service in July 2023, replacing the original Venturer which we had been running since 2016

...and it's predecessors

The bus service between Buckden & Grassington started as a horse-drawn mail bus in 1884. It was operated by Kit Chapman from a stables & garage at what is now Church House, Grassington. In 1905, the first motor bus was purchased to run on the Buckden - Skipton route. At that time, the return fare between Buckden and Grassington was 2 shillings (10p; this equates to ~£13 in today's money. The one-way trip took nearly 2 hours in the horse-drawn bus and 1 hour in the motor bus.

In 1930, the service was taken over by the West Yorkshire Road Car company, who ran it until 1992. The Buckden - Grassington service was then operated by Pride of the Dales until 2016, when the route was taken over by Upper Wharfedale Bus following cuts to rural bus service funding. In the 26 years that Pride of the Dales were running bus services in Wharfedale they carried more than 1.8 million passengers.
